The morning meeting today on Thursday the 22nd was the last, and we
were joined by new two members from Fukuyama and Australia, respectively.
As usual, after sharing new information from all the members, we
sang three Christmas songs chosen by 3 members, and as instrumental performances, one member played "On Wings of Song" by Mendelssohn on flute and the other "Interlude" from "Carmen" Suite 1 on
guitar (G. Bizet) on guitar.
We continue to hold our meetings in the same way next year too, so
please feel free to join us.

Mask-wearing now goes beyond just protecting against COVID-19
The number of the five monthly meetings have been reduced to three this month.
The reason for this change is that the meeting on Saturday the 13th happened to fall on the Bon holiday and the meeting on Thursday the 11th a national holiday, and each member must have his/her
own schedule in August.
A slowdown in August will be natural.

OESS Evening Course, June 04 (Sat., 19:00-): What would a world without airplanes be like?
The large quantity of global warming gas of CO2 has been emitted by airplanes.
A new normal is established (?) by the Corona disaster and we have learned a lot about the services and actions that people can do without.
We will need to work even harder to meet the Sustainable Development Goals.
I presented the actual sample of solar light and thermal water heating technology (up to 95 degrees Celsius) as a technology that does not emit carbon dioxide, which I have introduced to five

They were held on following dates with the topics prepared.

2. OESS Morning, May 26th (Thurs. 10:30～）: Largest wildlife crossing in the world breaks ground
In the morning course, in addition to a dog that has been helping the nearby blind couple, we members introduced various episodes of animals that live (or were living) around us. The coexistence
with animals must have a positive effect on the mental health of human beings.
In the afternoon course, as in the morning course, it was coincident that the participants introduced the wild animals in their daily lives in Japan and Australia, and confirmed the preciousness
and danger of these animals.

They were held on following dates with the topics prepared.
1. OESS Evening, May 7th (Sat. 19:00～）: Brazil's indigenous communities fear mining threat over war in Ukraine
2. OESS Morning, May 12th (Thurs. 10:30～）: Plant Native Plants to Support Local Environment, Wildlife
In the former session, members who have visited Brazil or wish to visit in the future expressed their impressions on Brazil. Still facing many problems?, what Brazil needs may be a political
reform, but before that, education in a broader sense may be important.
In the latter session, the time was spent on how Japanese members spent the time during Golden Week and the Australian member during their trip in central Australia in the past week.
The talk on the materials prepared for "Earth Day" on April 22 was again carried over to the next meeting.

1. OESS Evening, April 16th （Sat. 19:00～）: No more plastic cups — Starbucks Japan to get rid of plastic in stores with new initiatives
2. OESS Morning, April 28th （Thurs. 10:30～）: Plant Native Plants to Support Local Environment, Wildlife
In the former session, though the time was limited, the participants discussed the articles that they had read in advance, and showed the ideas that reducing the use of plastics would contribute
to the reduction of marine pollution and the decrease in the amount of disposed plastic would also contribute to the prevention of global warming.
In the latter session, the time was spent on the happenings upon the members' return to Australia, PCR tests, the members' travel plans for the coming summer, and their experiences in economy
class and business class on airplanes.
The talk on the materials prepared for "Earth Day" on April 22 was carried over to the next meeting.

Alanna Shaikh's presentation was about how to cope with Alzheimer's disease, one of the inevitable diseases, and one of her preparations was to be “a good person”. Some of the members reported
the cases they know.
In the he latter meeting, the same material and theme for the talk as the morning course was prepared, but most of the time was spent on the news and questions from each member and on the plan of
the visit by a member from Australia to Japan (to visit and stay in Onomichi).
Meetings of Onomichi Free English School (OESS) in the first half of March:
They were held on following dates with each talking topic.
1. OESS, Feb. 5th （Sat. 19:00～）: There are some really rotten people out there, and some of them call you on the phone.
2. OESS, Feb. 10th （Thurs. 10:30～）: The butterfly effect is not what you think it is.
In the evening course of the Eikaiwa Dojo, the members learned that scams in the U.S. are very similar to those in Japan, and heard a vivid story of how a 5 million yen phone scam was
actually prevented.
On the other hand, in the morning course, we learned that many Japanese oral traditions about natural phenomena are related to rain, and we speculated on the reasons for such phenomena. We
also tried to guess why cats and dogs are used in the English expression of raining cats and dogs.

Aranese, Spain's little-know language
In both courses, time passed with reports on the recent activities of the attending members and questions, and the exchange of opinions on the scheduled topics was carried over to the next
session.
The morning course on January 27th (Thursday) a week ago was moderated by Ms. K from Kagoshima prefecture, who prepared a reference on Aran, a small region on the border of Catalonia in Spain and
France that still maintains its own language.
There were seven participants, including Ms. T from Melbourne, Australia, now in the middle of summer. Ninety minutes quickly passed with reports on the topics of the past two weeks by each
member and the followed questions and answers about them, so we decided to use the prepared talk material for the next session.
The Winter Olympics will be added as a topic next time.
Evening Course (Sat) on January 15, 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
We have reverted to online meetings for the both meetings.
As usual, we had a good time talking and exchanging information on how we spent the New Year and what to expect this year.
In the morning course, there was a lot of interest in the topic of the summer New Year from Melbourne, Australia.
In the afternoon course, a new online member from Fukuoka, Japan, who returned to Japan after working in the U.S. for about 30 years, joined us and fascinated us with his fluent English and rich
topics.
