本ページは私が尊敬する小川先生に関するものです。

小川先生と私は決して親しい関係ではありませんが、たままた1970年代の同じ時期に同じサンディエゴ州立大学にいた関係で遭遇しました。

Prof. Ogawa and I are not close friends by any means, but we ran into each other at the same time in the 1970s at the same San Diego State University.

小川先生とのサンディエゴでの遭遇

以下は私が1976年から1977年にサンディエゴ州立大学で小川先生にお目にかかった時のことや著書について3回、フェイスブックに投稿した内容です。

NHK英会話講師：

ここ数年間、月曜日から金曜日にその声を聞いている英語講師は大西泰斗さん（添付写真）です。

10代から視聴しているNHKのテレビやラジオの英会話講師としては松本亨さん、東郷勝明さん、遠山顕さん、田崎清忠さん、マーシャ・クラッカワーさん、他が記憶にあります。

特に私の記憶に深い人は、カリフォルニアのサンディエゴ州立大学（SDSU）で日本語を教えていた小川邦彦さん（写真、マーシャ・クラッカワーさんと）です。

広島県出身で帰国後に山梨大学の助教授、NHKのテレビ英会話講師を務められましたが、54歳の若さで1988年に亡くなられました。

小川さんのサンディエゴ大学での授業には私は何回か日本語ネイティブとして参加したこと、学生のパーティーには気楽に顔をだしていただいたことも忘れられません。

アメリカ人学生が言うには彼はアメリカ人よりも英語に精通しているとのことでした。

NHK English Conversation Instructors:

For the past few years, the English instructor who I have listened to Monday through Friday is Prof. Yasuto Onishi (see the attached photo).

I still remember Mr. Toru Matsumoto, Mr. Katsuaki Togo, Mr. Ken Toyama, Kiyotada Tazaki, Ms. Marcia Krakower, and others as NHK TV or radio English instructors that I had been watching or listening to since I was a teenager.

One person I remember especially fondly is Mr. Kunihiko Ogawa-san (pictured, with Ms. Marsha Krakower), who taught Japanese at San Diego State University (SDSU) in California.

He is from Hiroshima Prefecture, worked as an assistant professor at the University of Yamanashi and as a TV English conversation instructor for NHK after returning from San Diego, but he passed away in 1988 at the young age of 54.

I will never forget that I attended several of Professor Ogawa's classes at San Diego State University as a native Japanese speaker, and that he was also happy to show up at student parties.

American students said he was more proficient in English than most Americans.

NHK英会話講師(2)、小川邦彦教授の論文：

1980年代にNHKテレビで8年間英会話講師を務められ、54歳という若さで逝去された小川教授（言語学博士）の12編の論文を同僚だった古家教授（現、山梨大学、教育学部長）からご親切にも先日郵送いただきました。

古家教授によりますと、小川教授は大学でも名物教授で学生の間で大変人気が高かった、とのことです。

小川教授のその学術業績と実用コミュニケーション英語普及へのご貢献を改めて認識しました。

1970年代のサンディエゴ州立大学での小川教授と私の遭遇については先日8月29日の私のFB投稿に記述した通りです。

私の場合、実用英語の習得、その重要性と恩恵を技術者（化学・電気）として感じているだけですから、小川先生の高度な学術論文は理解できないことも多いかと思いますが、拝読し、大事にして今後の勉強の糧にします。

NHK English Conversation Instructors (2), papers by Prof. Kunihiko Ogawa:

Prof. Furuya (currently Dean of the Faculty of Education, University of Yamanashi) kindly sent me 12 papers by Prof. Ogawa (PhD in Linguistics), who was a former English conversation teacher on NHK TV for 8 years in 1980s and passed away at the young age of 54.

According to Professor Furuya, Professor Ogawa was a well-known professor at the university and very popular among students.

I have again recognized Professor Ogawa's academic achievements and his contributions to the promotion of communicative English for practical use.

My encounter with Professor Ogawa at San Diego State University in 1970s was described in my FB post of August 29.

In my case, I am only learning practical English and feeling its importance and benefits as an engineer (chemistry and electricity), so I am sure there are many things I do not understand in Professor Ogawa's advanced academic papers, but I will read them, cherish them, and use them as food for future study.

NHK英会話講師(3)、英語留学の前に：

NHKテレビ英会話Ⅰの講師を1979年から8年間務められた小川邦彦教授が54歳で亡くなられた後で「小川邦彦の使える英語の教え方・学び方」の編集に尽力された古家貴雄教授がこの本の序文に以下のように書かれています。

「一度先生に、留学してから英語が上達したのかという旨の質問をしたことがあったが、その際、先生はむしろ留学前にある程度の英語力をみにつけてしまわれた、とお話しされていた。」

これを読んだ時、私は我が意を得た、と思いました。

小学校低学年までの子供であれば英語圏の現地、外国で十分な時間（10年）をかけて十分な英語力を習得することは方法としては可能です。

しかし、中高生や大人の場合は、時間やお金の制約がありますので、上述の方法で英語力をつけることは困難です。

すなわち、中高生や大人が英語留学をする場合、その前に国内、日本でできるだけの英語力をみにつけておき、そのレベルから現地、外国で十分な英語力にブラッシュアップさせてなければいけません。さもなければ、時間とお金の無駄使いになります。

私はこの考えをインターネット投稿中の私自身の2つの書物（無料）でも記述しています。

十分な事前準備が成功に必要であることは他のほとんどのケースで言えることです。

NHK English Conversation Instructor (3), Before Studying English abroad:

After Prof. Kunihiko Ogawa, who taught on NHK TV English I for eight years from 1979, passed away at the age of 54, Prof. Takao Furuya, who was instrumental in editing "How to Teach and Learn Useful English by Kunihiko Ogawa," wrote the following in the preface to this book.

Once I asked Prof. Ogawa if his English was improved since he had studied abroad, and he replied that he had already acquired a certain level of English before he went abroad.

When I read this, I thought to myself, “I get it.”

It is possible for children up to the early grades of elementary school to acquire sufficient English skills in an English-speaking country over a sufficient period of time (10 years).

However, for middle and high school students and adults, it is difficult to acquire English skills in the same way described above because of time and money constraints.

In other words, junior and senior high school students and adults who wish to study abroad must first acquire as much English skills as possible in Japan, and then brush up their English skills to a level that will be sufficient in a foreign country. Otherwise, it would be a waste of time and money.

I have written about the same idea in two of my own books (free of charge) that I have now been posting on the Internet.

Adequate advance preparation is necessary for success, as it is in most other cases.
